On March 4, Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, inaugurated the jointly-established Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Hydrogen Production Technology R&D Center. They also signed a cooperation agreement on “Megawatt Modular and High-Efficiency PEM Hydrogen Production Equipment and System Development”.

They will leverage this opportunity to implement more projects in more areas, and conduct in-depth and overall cooperation on the whole hydrogen industrial chain, chemical energy storage, coal-based chemicals and flue-gas treatment, generating mutual benefits and win-win results in a new way. This move will enhance Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group’s presence in advancing technologies of hydrogen production via electrolysis and develop into a model program for industrial application of leading hydrogen production technology. At the same time, it will bring more high-end hydrogen-related talents to Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group.

Compared with traditional technologies in this regard, PEM hydrogen production is more compatible with renewable power generation due to its fast response speed, high production efficiency and small area required. So it is also seen as the most promising technology to produce hydrogen. Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences has delivered many sci-tech innovations in areas of hydrogen and fuel cells, clean energy and defense-related technologies. Both sides will speed up the implementation of this project to facilitate the clean energy transformation of China.
